Distant Lands of Palm and Spice: Maine Ships and Mariners in Deepwater Commerce

Maine's commerce has always been tied to the sea.

This exhibit is about international trade involving Maine ports, Maine ships, and Maine mariners. Around 120 artifacts are used to give an understanding of foreign trade and some of the flavor of serving aboard a merchant vessel. The visitor enters through the door of a bank vault to emphasize the point of carrying cargo – to make money for the ship’s owners. Paintings, models and photographs demonstrate the changing appearance of the ships over the centuries. Cargo items, gear, and exotic mementoes illustrate the lives of the men, women, and children who traveled the world from Maine.
